Following a skirmish on June 28, 1864, a truce is called so the North can remove their dead and wounded. For two hours, Yankees and Rebels mingle, with some of the latter even assisting the former in their grisly work. Newspapers are exchanged. Northern coffee is swapped for Southern tobacco. Yanks crowd around two Rebel generals, soliciting and obtaining autographs.
As they part, a Confederate calls to a Yankee, "I hope to miss you, Yank, if I happen to shoot in your direction." "May I, never hit you Johnny if we fight again," comes the reply.
The reprieve is short. A couple of months, dozens of battles, and more than 30,000 casualties later, the North takes Atlanta.
One of the most dramatic and decisive episodes of the Civil War, the Atlanta Campaign was a military operation carried out on a grand scale across a spectacular landscape that pitted some of the war's best (and worst) general against each other.
In Decision in the West, Albert Castel provides the first detailed history of the Campaign published since Jacob D. Cox's version appeared in 1882. Unlike Cox, who was a general in Sherman's army, Castel provides an objective perspective and a comprehensive account based on primary and secondary sources that have become available in the past 110 years.
Castel gives a full and balanced treatment to the operations of both the Union and Confederate armies from the perspective of the common soldiers as well as the top generals. He offers new accounts and analyses of many of the major events of the campaign, and, in the process, corrects many long-standing myths, misconceptions, and mistakes. In particular, he challenges the standard view of Sherman's performance.
Written in present tense to give a sense of immediacy and greater realism, Decision in the West demonstrates more definitively than any previous book how the capture of Atlanta by Sherman's army occurred and why it assured Northern victory in the Civil War.

From Library Journal
Of the many Civil War titles published each year, very few stand heads taller than the rest. This is such a book. Exhaustively researched, richly detailed, and told in the present tense, it has brought to life all the participants, from private to general. Incorporating both primary and secondary sources, Castel ( The Presidency of Andrew Johnson , LJ 9/1/79) provides an objective perspective seldom equaled, giving full and balanced treatment to both Union and Confederate armies through the use of new accounts and analyses of major events. Along the way, he corrects many mistakes and dispels longstanding myths. In particular, he challenges the standard view of Sherman's performance. This is an important, original book that will immediately become the standard study of the campaign. Highly recommended for most libraries. History Book Club selection.

'A remarkable book. Castel's superb descriptions of massive armies on the move as well as the stunning viciousness of combat [and] his deft weavings of biographical sketches and simple stories of bravery...combine to form a work that is consistently compelling and ultimately convincing.' -Civil War History

Denouement in the Peach State
By William S. Grass
Decision in the West is well researched, and the narrative is well constructed from the various primary sources. In his own analysis, Castel drops the bombshell that Sherman was not a very good general. If only old Slow Trot, George Thomas, could have had his way, then things would have ended much sooner. Fortunately for the Union, the principles of industrial war were already kicking in, and good generals were no longer needed to win wars.
Castel avoids the annoying habit of Civil War historians who name their chapters after a quote from primary sources. Unfortunately, though, he names them after the month during which the chapter's events occur. Is it asking too much to be able to look at the table of contents in one of these campaign books and actually have chapter names describe what the chapter is about?

one of the best books on the Atlanta campaign
By lordhoot
This proves to be one of the best books ever written on the Atlanta Campaign. The research and details of the campaign proves to be superbly done and the author writes with great deal of clarity and understanding. The book provides a great deal of footnotes, its pretty clear that the author totally understand his subject matter. While it is very detail, its also very readable and that is an asset since this book can be read by almost any one who is interested in this subject.
The author wrote in his preface that he may be bit harsh toward General Sherman and he is. He also wrote that he is writing this book as if the event was unfolding and that is also good. However, the two approaches does not match since the author is very harsh toward Sherman but only due to hindsight and research that he can be so critical of Sherman. Sherman didn't benefit from the author's hindsights and research so he was making mistakes that the author pointed them out with great relish. Is this a fair approach? The author also seem to have a bone to picked with Liddell Hart's military biography of Sherman. He definitely don't like that book and made every effort to debunked it. While the author is hard on Sherman, he is also quite hard on the Confederate commanders, Johnson and Hood. It may sound like the author don't care for any army commander of any army during this campaign. I thought the book sometime read like two commanders were playing "dumb and dumber" act.
Still, it does go through the Atlanta campaign with an certain level of authority and it does helped clear up many elements of the campaign which have not been very clear before. Outside of the author's treatment of Sherman, Johnson and Hood, three stooges that can't do much right, the book does a great job.
