Group theory has long been an important computational tool for physicists, but, with the advent of the Standard Model, it has become a powerful conceptual tool as well. This book introduces physicists to many of the fascinating mathematical aspects of group theory, and mathematicians to its physics applications. Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this book gives a comprehensive overview of the main aspects of both finite and continuous group theory, with an emphasis on applications to fundamental physics. Finite groups are extensively discussed, highlighting their irreducible representations and invariants. Lie algebras, and to a lesser extent Kac-Moody algebras, are treated in detail, including Dynkin diagrams. Special emphasis is given to their representations and embeddings. The group theory underlying the Standard Model is discussed, along with its importance in model building. Applications of group theory to the classification of elementary particles are treated in detail.

Filled with insights, but not for the beginner!
By GradStudent
I am often amazed by how many useful pieces of information the author managed to include in such a thin book! Dr. Ramond has written a thoughtful text that I turn to on a regular basis; it captures the most important aspects of many subjects concisely and clearly. Note that the author covers many topics, so if you are looking for monograph that explores only a few concepts in great detail this may not be for you. Also, this is really not for first-time learning - at least some exposure to the basics of the material is necessary. Once you have that this book will take your understanding to the next level.
My favorite parts of the book include the su(2) and su(3) algebra chapters (various bases for the root spaces, the Sakata model, the eightfold way, etc.), the chapter on Lie algebra classification, representation theory of Lie algebras (the Weyl group, Clifford algebras, spinor representations, oscillator representations, etc.), and the section on quarks.

Sometimes too mathematical

A good book that unfortunately looses its focus on physical applications sometimes.

Very interesting as mathematical view about physics.
By Edoardo Angeloni
The book talks about the applications of the group theory to the quantum physics. The methods used by auctor are in relation to the differential geometry and the matrix algebra. The instruments applied are traditional, as the Hilbert spaces and the Galois and Lie groups, but the auctor shows also important properties of modern physics.
