All-in Fighting, by W.E. Fairbairn

The author of this concise guide to unarmed combat and self-defence is a legend. W. E. Fairbairn (1885-1960) spent over thirty years in the tough environment of the Riot Squads of China's Shanghai Municipal Police. In order to lower levels of Police mortality at the hands of Chinese Tongs, he studied ancient Chinese and Japanese martial arts, including Ju-jitsu, and was the first foreigner to be awarded a black belt in the discipline. He developed his own system which he called 'Defendu'. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was recruited by Britain's Special Operations Executive as an Instructor in unarmed combat and expounded the deadly mysteries of attack and defence to scores of trainee agents about to be dropped into occupied Europe. His methods were approved and officially adopted throughout the British army. Fairbairn also developed weapons and defence aids such as bullet proof vests. He is best known as the co-inventor of the famous Sykes-Fairbairn knife. In this book he expounds his distilled experience of unarmed combat. Fully illustrated, it shows how to deliver deadly blows with hand, fist, knee and boot; wrist, bear- and strangle holds (and how to break them); how to throw an enemy, and how to break their backs; how to disarm a pistol-wielding attacker; and securing a prisoner. The book also contains a chapter on the use of the rifle in close combat by Captain P. N. Walbridge.

The real deal.

All-In Fighting is essentially the British version of Get Tough! (or more accurately, Get Tough! is the American version of All-In Fighting). As the British people were likely to face invasion by Nazi thugs, requiring ordinary citizens to become guerilla fighters overnight, there is a section on the use of the Lee-Enfield 303 bolt action rifle in this version. Not surprisingly, this manual makes the perfect companion to H. Von Dach's Total Resistance.

While some of the holds are of limited use, the "Blows" section includes only those techniques that are most effective for personal combat. In fact, by the end of the second world war Fairbairn's entire syllabus of (proactive) unarmed combat was made up only of these techniques. The pistol disarmament techniques are also decidedly real world and useable.

In addition to methods of unarmed combat there is a section on the use of the stick (practical dirty tricks, not endless stick-on-stick bashing repetitions), a short and to the point description on how to use the knife, and a section on the close-quarters use of the Lee-Enfield 303 (this section shows how effective the bolt action rifle can be in trained hands - even in a world of assault rifles the bolt action rifle is still commonly used today).

A great advantage of the "Fairbairn Method" is that all the techniques are easily learned, can be trained solo or with a partner, and are effective under stress - even without much training.

One of the other useful aspects of All-In Fighting is that much of it has to do with what is commonly referred to today as "pre-emptive" techniques - that is, ACTIVE measures to end a fight before it has a chance to get going - in other words, real world street fighting.

All methods are described in crystal clear detail and illustrated with equal vividness by "Hary".

Don't buy into all the advertising for "exotic" or "secret" skills, whether mental or physical. Save your money and get a book that will actually change your life like All-In Fighting.

This one is the real deal - old school, hardcore methods that actually work on the street.

Excellent book, from the UK, you gotta have it!

Excellent book, from the UK, you gotta have it, and jeese they are selling this cheap, that if Get Tough wasn't on sale, and you were on an extreme budget, then this would be cheaper to get and its nearly the same. I mean, its from the naval and military press in association with royal armouries, which gives it an authentic appeal since W.E. Fairbairn was a British subject. Oh sure, its very nearly the same as "Get Tough", the version geared towards Americans in WW2, this one was for our Tommy brit allies in WW2 with special section in the back on care and use of the No.1Mark3* .303 rifle, and a little different forward. Buy Get Toughh as well, of course, Defendu(Defend-you), Scientific Self Defense, and Shooting to Live all by the same author as reprints. Of note are Rex Applegate's Kill or Get Killed.
All these works are "old", but unless the human body has gone through some sort of evolution in the last half century, these techniques have been incorporated in modern self defense/offense techniques from what I've read from real expert reviewers. Case in point, the simple knife hand "chop", starts out the demonstrations, and you'd be surprised to know that one can possibly break another persons' arm, but it states not possible with a closed fist, well that makes sense, and it of course gives various targets and technique for accomplishing this "chop".

"Get Tough!" plus shooting
By E. M. Van Court
Newly reprinted by Paladin Press! From the start: yes, only three stars.

This is "Get Tough" plus a chapter on shooting. In all, not bad just dated. The shooting chapter is antiquated, but interesting from a historical perspective.

Regarding the unarmed combat part:

The shortcomings:

-The illustrations are only 'OK', not great. I like line drawings for illustrating unarmed combat, but usually it takes two or three drawings per technique to make things clear.

-A limited range of techniques. It covers the basics pretty well, but doesn't challenge the imagination.

-A lot of military texts (like this) were grouped as lesson plans. It wouldn't have been hard to do, but Fairbairn chose not to do it.

-One or two of the techniques don't stand up well to critical thought, most notably the one with a matchbox in one's hand. Only OK as a technique, but it is very easy for students to fixate on the matchbox rather than the principles of the technique.

Ultimately, the poor illustrations was the killer for me. Never the less, this book has a lot of merit;

-A limited range of techniques... Yes, this is also a shortcoming, but on the other hand it keeps the students focused on what matters.

-Clear and explicit text. This one is not going to win literary awards, but it conveys information clearly, completely, and concisely.

-'Been there, done that' credibility. Fairbairn was not a streetfront studio expert, nor was he a competition kickboxer, nor even a UFC wrestler. He had been a cop in one of the toughest cities in the world, and then trained British commandos in WWII. If the techniques didn't work, his trainees would have gotten really vindictive (if they lived). His trainees lived, and that alone is about the highest recommendation you could hope for.

Three stars, but it has a place in my permanant collection both for the techniques and for the historical value, take this as you will.
