Good textbook, but you must be otherwise very familiar with QFT

I am working through this book now and just about to finish part II.

If I am not mistaken, this is currently the only book dealing exclusive with the subject of quantum phase transition.

A basic recurring theme is: at T=0 you have a critical point and two (quantum) phases on two sides. Add a little temperature, and you gets a few thermally-excited quasiparticles above the ground state on either side of the critical point. Except when you are immediately above the critical point, where the quasiparticle picture breaks down.

Sachdev systematically treats each model in the same way. First he would establish the behaviors of the two zero-T phases, and then discuss the finite-T region where the physics can be described by quasiparticles, and finally treat the quantum critical regime. Having a unifying structure makes grasping the concept easier.

That said, Sachdev does assume a very good foundation in QFT. It is commonplace in the book where he just defines an action, states that he is going to integrate out such-and-such, and then slaps the end result on you straightaway. You will have a really hard time making sense of what he wrote if you have just finished the standard one-year sequence of QFT.

(If you can do most of the problems in Peskin/Schoeder without refering to the book or your notes, you are good to go.)

Bottom line: be prepared for many omitted derivations and missing steps. Four stars, still. At least Sachdev provides a coherent direction, and I have seen books much more incomprehensible.

This book is fantastic. "Dirty French" is full of idioms and colloquial phrases. I can't imagine anything left out. As for the name, out of 20 chapters, only the last two deal with "dirty" topics. The rest deals with idioms and how to use phrases.

Entertaining, and not too dirty!

This is a very handy guide to colloquial French. Most of us in the US, I suspect, learn a rather formal version of the language, which can leave us puzzled at crucial moments, either while in France or while trying to understand what the characters in a movie are really saying behind the subtitles. The book isn't really that dirty, in spite of the title. Most of it deals with quite inoffensive slang and colloquialisms. The section on "verlan" or reversed-syllables (see the Wikipedia article on it) was especially interesting and revealing. After three years of French and a summer in Geneva, I had no idea this even existed!

Depends on what you're looking for.

For the most part this is a book of French slang. Most of the slang in it is pretty mild day to day stuff akin to most English slang.

If you're interested in the more colorful curse words alluded to in the title you will find that only the last few chapters are dedicated to that.

The Kaplan Kash Grab

Other 1-star reviews for this biochem review book claim that there are no passages in the book. I wholeheartedly agree with those reviewers, and that fact is worthy of a 1-star rating in itself. However, my 1-star rating comes from the fact that a lot of molecular genetics (a BIOLOGY topic) is discussed here in a biochemistry book. Why aren't those topics in the Biology review book instead?? The AAMC topic outline clearly and explicitly lists molecular genetics (with DNA technology) as BIO topics.

Now, it doesn't take a psychometrician to realize Kaplan's motives here. They were looking to perform a "cash grab" on pre-med students, plain and simple. In order to effectively prepare for the Biology portion of the exam (which contains the most content), you would also need to purchase the Biochemistry review book. That's a really awful and sneaky marketing ploy put forth by Kaplan. I am SO sick and tired of testing companies trying to rape and pillage the pockets of already poor students. It's disgusting. This is the kind of thinking you need to possess to REALLY succeed in medical school. Try to pick out the hidden, underlying motives behind everything. Once you see that, you can glean the bigger picture a lot more easily.

The book is a highly detailed review of biochemistry. I hadn't had biochemistry in a few years so it was a helpful refresher. There are no passages in the book just free-standing questions. However, there is access online.

This book was exactly what I was looking for.
After learning bits and pieces about Ibogaine from the internet, this book finally pulled it all together and answered my questions. I found the book accessible, informative and balanced; he did not try to sell Ibogaine or make any crazy promises. If you are thinking about experimenting with Ibogaine, then you should definitely read it.

The perfect book to answer all your questions about ibogaine

My interest for ibogaine started when I was a counselor at a methadone clinic. Four of the patients stated they had used ibogaine to get clean, though all relapsed within 6-24 months. Nevertheless I was curious about it and wanted to learn more. I had done some research on the internet but never was satisfied with my search results. I have a blog and was planning on writing an article on ibogaine soon. I watched a documentary on youtube called Ibogaine -Rite of Passage that amazed me, though it still left me in need of far more knowledge.
Ibogaine Explained was the perfect book to answer all my questions about ibogaine. It was easy to read and covered all the aspects I wanted to know more about. I feel very confident I can now write a great article on ibogaine that will spread more awareness to the world. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about ibogaine, whether it's for addiction, spirituality, emotions, physical ailments or whatever else.
This book would have been even better had it been edited better, though I still gained tremendous value from it. I thank the author Peter Frank for providing the world with a much needed book on ibogaine!!!

Very good overview of this plant and it's uses.

This book contained everything I wanted to know on the subject and some I didn't know that I wanted to know. You can tell the author has had substantial experience with Iboga. He gives advice for who is a good candidate and preparation needed for a session. He touches on how various drugs can stay in your system for months and makes recommendations switching to substitute drugs before coming to a session that are flushed out of the body more quickly. He gives a good description of the different phases experienced during a session, how long the effects typically last and advice for the new found freedom in the months afterwards. He gives a good description of the legal/unregulated status in various countries and talks about the spiritual benefits of Iboga, touches briefly on Ayahuasca and describes the difference between a hallucinogen like LSD and Iboga.

Another reviewer said this plant is a gift from God, and I wholeheartedly agree. The entire time I read, I couldn't help but thinking of the true compassion he has on his children and the simple means he gave us to fully and completely heal ourselves. This was not the focus of the book, but my own thoughts.

poorly written textbook

Where I do not doubt that the author of this text is knowledgeable in their field, this book is flat-out poorly written. Poor grammar, poor word choice, poor sentence structure. It is very distracting to read and hard to follow some paragraphs. I had to read about 9 chapters for a logistics class and enjoyed none of it.
