Investment: A History (Columbia Business School Publishing), by Norton Reamer, Jesse Downing

Investing―the commitment of resources to achieve a return―affects individuals, families, companies, and nations, and has done so throughout history. Yet until the sixteenth century, investing was a privilege of only the elite classes. The story behind the democratization of investing is bound up with some of history's most epic events. It is also a tale rich with lessons for professional and everyday investors who hope to make wiser choices.

This entertaining history doubles as a sophisticated account of the opportunities and challenges facing the modern investor. It follows the rise of funded retirement; the evolution of investment vehicles and techniques; investment misdeeds and regulatory reform; government economic policy; the development of investment theory; and the emergence of new investment structures. Norton Reamer and Jesse Downing map these trends and profile the battle between low cost index and exchange-traded funds, on the one hand, and the higher-fee hedge funds and private equity, on the other. By helping us understand this history and its legacy of risk, Reamer and Downing hope to better educate readers about the individual and societal impact of investing and ultimately level the playing field.

Review

An easy-to-read primer on stock market investment, traced back from today to Greek and Roman times so that we may understand how we arrived at the present system of investment management and investment products.

(Janette Rutterford, Open University and University of York)

This important, well-written, and engaging book covers 4,000 years of investing history with an emphasis on the last fifty years, where so much has been happening. Full of insights, interesting people, and enduring wisdom.

(Charley Ellis, author of What It Takes and Winning the Loser's Game)

Norton Reamer and Jesse Downing have delivered a truly impressive history of investments and the investment-management business, starting from its earliest origins in the ancient world to its most recent and innovative forms, for example, the hedge funds, private-equity pools, and other forms of alternative investments in the twenty-first century. It is not only a complete history but a well-organized and analytical one, built with continual reference to the important principles of business and investing.

(Jay Light, dean emeritus, Harvard Business School)

For most of recorded history few people had wealth, and there were few options for investing it. Reamer and Downing show how that changed dramatically over the past two to three centuries. Today the vast middle classes of developed countries have joined the rich in having massive amounts of wealth to invest. Asset classes available to investors have proliferated, as have professional investment managers. This well-researched book is at once a welcome addition to the literature of financial history and a guide to navigating the complex world of modern investment.

(Richard Sylla, New York University Stern School of Business)

A tour de force look at investment from previously unseen perspectives.

(Barry Ritholtz, columnist for Bloomberg View and the Washington Post)

A reader's time and energy devoted to it are likely to yield competitive returns.

(Institutional Investor)

Interesting!
By Autamme_dot_com
We are all affected by investments, even if we do not necessarily have any spare cash to put away for a rainy day. Investment is not just for individuals, as companies and governments invest as well. This is not a book that will tell you how to invest, even though it may give some insight, but a considered look at the history of investment through the ages. It is by no means a dry read!

Investing was once a privilege of the elite. Many feel that it remains the same today due to global economic conditions, although it is of course more accessible than before and we are much more exposed to investments. The authors take the reader on a tour, showing how investment has developed and became central to everyday life, with its accompanying highs and lows.

It is not a feel-good sort of book where reality has been glossed over. Whilst you can read about how investment has become democratised and more-accessible, you also get to learn in detail about frauds and other manipulation that investors and their investments face. Just prepare to be swamped with information. It is true to say that most people don’t really understand investments and investing and for most any control is a veneer or illusion, since you are hoping to make the least-bad selection from the choices being offered.

The book mixes carefully the need to inform, entertain, enlighten and maybe even shock and does it well. It probably won’t be a book that the general reader rushes towards (more fool them!) although for those who have an interest in a bit of everything, this is going to be a good companion for a few reading sessions.

Should the book not be enough for the reader, the authors have added incredibly copious notes and references for further reading, so that source material can be examined ad infinitum. Accordingly, this book can be a great source of academic indulgence as well. The authors have done well to distil a broad, complex subject into this fairly hefty book, whilst keeping it accessible, interesting and inviting to readers of all types.

Unique and Fascinating Investment Book
By Chip Robie
Investment: A History deserves a home on every investment professional’s or enthusiast’s bookshelf. Uniquely, it tells the story of how today’s world of investing came to be. It is not a primer per se, like Burton Malkiel’s “Random Walk” though one can find nuggets of sound investment advice. It has a broader sweep than other interesting investment books by the likes of Peter Bernstein and Charles Ellis. As such, it touches on all aspects of investing but from a historian’s perspective.

The book’s principal insight is that over time investing has become more democratic, benefiting society and improving people’s lives, even while creating great wealth for many of its practitioners. While demagogues cavalierly claim the “system” (presumably including the world of investing) has become rigged, the authors’ research suggests otherwise, reminding us where we’ve been and are likely heading.

Some readers may find the book starts a bit slowly with visits to ancient investment practices in Mesopotamia and the Roman Empire. They should persevere! Among other things, they’ll discover the origin of the twenty percent performance fee utilized by hedge and private equity funds. And the book’s pace picks up nicely with its chronicle of industry rogues and the passage of ERISA with its impact on investing for retirement. The chapter on investment theory is written with great clarity, worthy of a Chartered Financial Analyst. The chapter on hedge funds and alternative investment vehicles likewise illuminates an otherwise opaque area of the industry. Each chapter stands alone, making it easy for readers to skip around and focus on their greatest interests.

Norton Reamer has a singular industry vantage point: security analyst, chief investment officer, chief executive officer of public and private asset managers, industry entrepreneur and now historian. Given this experience, I wish he and his co-author had devoted more analysis as to what over time accounts for effective vs. ineffective investment professionals, executives and their firms. With the well-publicized struggles of many active investment managers today, it would be interesting to have their historical perspective here too. But this is a minor quibble in an otherwise fascinating work of history that helps us better understand our world today.

This was an excellent book highlighting the complex history of investments. The authors do a great job explaining the democratization of investment in relative layman terms.

Delusional: The Story of the Jonathan Levine Gallery, by Caleb Neelon

Widely revered as the artists' gallerist, Jonathan Levine has nourished a much needed alternative viewpoint within the stilted New York art market. In the pages of Delusional, readers will discover the fascinating backstory that brought this punk kid from Trenton to the hallowed gallery walls of Chelsea. LeVine began his career in the arts publishing a fanzine in the 1980s and then curating shows at diverse venues in the 90s. By the turn of the millennium, LeVine had opened up Tin Man Alley, his own gallery located in New Hope, and then Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Jonathan LeVine Gallery was officially launched in New York City in 2005. Since then, LeVine has brought his considerable talents to bear, focusing on work influenced by illustration, comic books, graffiti, street art and pop culture imagery. Levine's featured artists tend to share a strong figurative and narrative inclination and include Doze Green, Shepard Fairey, Audrey Kawasaki, Gary Baseman, Camille Rose Garcia, Tara McPherson, Josh Agle (aka Shag) and a long list of other esteemed artists. Lavish illustrations throughout complete the package.

Overpriced and unneccesary
By Consumer # 1
It has several fancy transparent overlays that don't add anything to the learning process and are kind of a pain when searching for information. The book has a textured cover. Extras like these don't add any value to the text but they do add to the price. Lastly, the text cites a deluge of research studies but doesn't really explain which studies have been replicated and had the same results and which studies are just anomalies. It treats each study as proof that various theories are true, but the connection isn't always quite clear. Lastly, this is another case of a publisher creating a new edition to increase sales. The text doesn't offer enough new material to warrant the high price.

The last Renaissance man
By David Bonesteel
In addition to being a legendary science-fiction writer, Isaac Asimov is one of the most successful science popularizers of all time, and this book demonstrates why. In it, he delivers a comprehensive, well-organized, well-written survey of the known sciences as of the time of publication. But, since that time was over twenty years ago, is his book still worth reading today? Of course, it is! This is because Asimov takes a historical approach, first explaining the initial questions that puzzled observers of the natural world, then following the research of talented and brilliant scientists over the centuries that brought us to our present-day understanding. This lends much of the text the fascination of a mystery story, and gives the attentive reader a good basic grounding in the sciences.

One for the ages
By C. L.
This book is a kind of executive summary of the state of science as of 1984, and like most executive summaries, this one doesn't require you to be a genius to understand it.

Although the book is meticulously organized into sections and has both name and subject indexes, the best way to read it is from cover to cover. There is actually a kind of narrative structure that underpins the whole thing.

The book is divided into the physical sciences and the biological sciences, and the progression in one section mirrors that in the other. The physical sciences section goes from big to small -- from the universe as a whole to the stars, to the solar system, to the earth, and from there to progressively smaller matters: the elements, particles and energy. The biological sciences section goes from small to big -- from organic molecules to cells, to microorganisms, to the body, and then to the species, evolution and the human mind.

Ideas build one upon the other. So, for example, by the time Asimov introduces you to the periodic table in Chapter 6, you're already familiar with X-rays because he discussed them in Chapter 2, when he was talking about radio astronomy. By the time he discusses the chemical structure of organic molecules in Chapter 11, you're already an old hand when it comes to electron transfers because Asimov covered the idea thoroughly in Chapter 6.

Asimov was never shy about his own accomplishments, and he didn't hesitate to cite himself in the book, such as discussing his 1955 insight into the importance of carbon 14 in the human body and his Three Laws of Robotics in the section on artificial intelligence. Throughout, the writing is wonderfully clear and lively.

A few quibbles. First, it's a 30-year-old book, and so there are some things that scientists have changed their minds about, such as the psychological nature of XYY males. There are also a few typos and errors, and for this, the publishers who failed to fix them after 30 years surely deserve blame. For example, the Chinese-American biochemist Cho Hao Li, who synthesized human-growth hormone in 1970, is listed under the "Cs" in the name index, and not the "Ls" as he should be.

Another problem is that the paperback edition was apparently photocopied from the hardcover. This means that the periodic table, for example, which had shaded the rare earth series to set them apart, is illegible in the paperback, since the shaded sections appear as black bars. (This is a minor problem, since in today's world, any reader can find a periodic table on the Web.)

But what really strikes me is how well the book still holds up after three decades, and I'm not entirely sure that that's a good thing. I think if Asimov were alive today, it would take him fewer than 50 additional pages to cover all the changes since 1984, and this is with a book that's 802 pages without the appendix. If Asimov were to rise from the grave, I can't help but think he'd want to know: "What have you people been doing for the past 30 years?"

4th edition, reprint of 1984 edition
By Charles E. Tomlinson
I believe this has no updates from 1984 edition. Revised probably means from earlier editions or corrections of typos. So if you think publication date of 1993 means more info like I did, save your money.

Peony - A vibrant and beautiful girl raised in China by her widower father. He taught her reading, calligraphy, painting and kung fu. At age four, she resisted foot-binding. At 16, she rejected an arranged marriage; repulsed rape attempts in Hong Kong by her uncle; and signed on as a domestic to a brothel in San Francisco for five years. She sent the $200 advance stipend to her sick father. This is a story of Peony's determination to control her own destiny against great odds. The mystic jade pendant - Peony's grandmother gave her the heirloom pendant saying, "Keep it with you at all times. It will protect you and give you wisdom." Frank Michaels, unintentionally snatched the pendant from Peony during the 1871 Chinatown Massacre. He kept the pendant as his surrogate mistress for 52 years. In 1923, he returned it to her husband Tom Wong who brought it to her grave in a very surreal encounter. Frank desperately needed absolution for his participation in the Massacre before he dies. During Peony's short life, three Chinese men and Frank were infatuated with her. She loved Tom dearly. Their life together was short but his love for her was unceasing.

Historical fiction, mystery, romance and redemption - set in 1800's California
By Lisa Kearns
I often read historical fiction, especially stories about the Old West, but didn't know much about the history of Chinese immigrants who worked in our country in the 1800s. The author sent me a copy of his book in exchange for my writing a review, and I was happy I was given the opportunity to learn about this part of Chinese-American history. I was ashamed to read of the way Chinese immigrants were treated in the days when the railroad was being built.

I enjoyed the story of Peony and her jade pendant, and the three men who loved her. Peony was a strong, smart and beautiful woman, in a time when Chinese women were raised to be meek and illiterate. All of the characters were well developed and made me feel they were real. There was just the right amount of romance, mystery, history and violence to keep me turning the pages. The surprise ending tied up some of the unanswered questions in the story, and overall this is quick and enjoyable read.

The book itself could have used some more editing, as there were some grammatical errors and incorrect usage of some words - Psoriasis instead of Cirrhosis, bare instead of bear - and a few paragraphs that repeated previous parts of the story. But don't let these small issues keep you from discovering this new author and the story he has to tell. Well done!

Intriguing mixture of historical fact and fiction.
By Janette Skinner
I was given a copy of this book by the writer to read and review and was delighted by it. The book is a clever mix of historical fact and fiction and gives details of a little known Chinatown massacre in 1871, at a time when members of the Chinese community were very badly treated by most of the other immigrants to America. The story gives a lot of food for thought and I certainly learned a lot about that time in recent history.

The book is not all tragedy, there is romance and also insight into the position of women in China and how they were treated in their own country and in America. The heroine, Peony is a courageous and likeable character who overcomes numerous hardships from members of her own family and men trying to take advantage of her. She finds herself at one point on the streets of Hong Kong with no family support, and no money and she becomes the victim of a prostitute tout.

The pace of the story is good with changes of scene, short chapters and plenty of believable players in the story.

The Chinese immigrants seemed to have suffered more than most in the volatile emerging society, and as the writer put it, the immigrants from Europe brought with them their ingrained prejudices and hatreds. What this book gives, is a feeling that the Chinese people appeared to bring to their new country their natural spiritualism and capacity for endurance.

There are a few proofing mistakes in the book (e.g. doused instead of dozed, page 125) and some annoying grammar mistakes, which are probably more the fault of the editor than the writer, but this is a good book and I would have no problem recommending it.

Review of The Jade Pendant (Kindle Edition)
By Edgar
LP Leung, the author, wrote that this book is hopefully the big first step in the fulfilling his dream to write a story for the big screen.

In his story, there are a rich complement of heroes and villains -- plus some non-gratuitous violence and sex - all making a perfect set of ingredients for a weekly TV series or a one-time miniseries. A TV spin-off from this novel would be especially enjoyable for those that watched the 1980s TV series "Kung Fu" and the 1977 TV miniseries "Roots."

On the book cover and under the book title, the subtitle "a fictionalized history" refers to the jade pendant - the historical events referenced in the book are true. Kindle readers will be able to click to the referenced events to learn of their significance to the novel story.

BTW, to get an appreciation of dollar sums listed in the book, the numbers should be multiplied by ~15 (to account for the inflation of the dollar from the 1865 Civil War era to today's value).

Full disclosure: Mr. Leung and I are historians at the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California. We are colleagues and were authors of two history books in the "Portraits of Pride" series.

Fifty Places to Sail Before You Die: Sailing Experts Share the World's Greatest Destinations, by Chris Santella

Landlubbers joke that sailors are always wanting to head off to the ends of the earth, but Chris Santella takes that life-changing desire very seriously. In this, the third installment in his immensely successful “Fifty Places” series, Santella assembles a crew of the world’s greatest championship racers and professional adventurers and persuades them to disclose their favorite destinations around the globe.

Interviewees include some of the best-known men and women in the sport: Tom Whidden and Gary Jobson (members of the winning 1987 America’s Cup crew), Jeff Johnstone (of J-Boats), award-winning sailing writer Lin Pardy, and many others. The amazingly diverse places they’ve selected range from clubby East Coast ports (Marblehead, Annapolis), to idyllic tropical refuges (Ilha Grande, Brazil; the Polynesian atoll of Mopelia), to some of the most hair-raisingly treacherous waters on earth (Cape Horn).

Coastlines around the world—even Antarctica and the Arctic—are represented, and the chosen spots include some spectacular inland waters, such as the Bras d’Or Lakes and the North Channel of Lake Huron. For each of the 50 places, the sailor recommending the venue spins an entertaining yarn about his or her experience there, and each description is accompanied by a "make you want to go there now" photograph.

Great Idea; Mediocre Execution
By TigerTC
Chris Santella`s "Fifty Places to Sail Before You Die" is an interesting but ultimately disappointing book. Although the idea of a collection of unforgettable places to sail is an excellent idea, this book is one of unrealized potential.

The author contacted and interviewed famous sailors from around the world - racers, charterers, instructors, photographers, etc. - for their favorite places to sail. For each great sailing area, he wrote a 3-4 page blurb about the area, and included a small bio of the expert along with some basic information about how to travel to the area, when the best sailing season is, and information about local accommodations and charters.

Unfortunately, Santella does not sell these sailing locales. I expected a book on great sailing areas to include numerous dazzling photographs of each area, but most of the sections include only one picture from the area (some none). Too many of the write-ups focus on the history of sailing an area or other trivia instead of the reasons to sail that area now, and there are no maps to give one a flavor of the area - another must, to me, in a book about sailing locations.

Despite these drawbacks, there is still some interesting information in this book and the sailing locales are a nice sampling of different types of sailing locales. Ultimately, although this book did not give me a burning desire to travel to many of these places, this book is still a worthwhile purchase for anyone with a love of sailing.

Too much of a Chamber of Commerce Approach
By David H. Knight
Having been to 33 of the 50, I was looking for more reasons why they were chosen as the best places to go. There were very poor descriptions or justifications for the choices. Some totally missed the main attributes of the places chosen. Merely a business description of places chosen.

A new path to the waterfall : last poems, by Raymond. Carver

When Raymond Carver died in 1988, America lost one of its great writers. His characters, usually working-class people, often waged an inner, seemingly passive battle with life. Their triumph-and Carver's brilliance-shone in the communicative potential that his people found in themselves when trouble ruled. It was with poetry that Carver began his literary career. His final book, A New Path to the Waterfall, reflects mostly the last things to occupy him, so irresolution is acutely present. There is foreboding mixed with acceptance, suddenness courting eventuality, fear and hope holding hands. Farewell is uppermost, a door closing softly. Tess Gallagher, who was Carver's companion for 11 years and wife during the final months, describes in an affecting introductory essay their collaboration in arranging these poems. Raymond Carver, author of Where I'm Calling From, is widely considered one of the great short story writers of our time. A New Path to the Waterfall was Carver's last book, and shows a writer telling the truth as best as he knows how in the time left to him. The sixty-odd poems in this collection are linked by Carver with selections from other writers, most notably Chekhov, whose work was an inspiration and a guide, and by the cumulative force of the life and death questions he poses in them. As Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet guided countless readers discovering their true love and work, Carver's book will guide those in the process of celebrating a limited life and mourning the inescapable end of it. A New Path to the Waterfall is an essential book for those who admire Carver's work, and testament to the transcendent strength of the human spirit. In her introductory essay, Tess Gallagher, Carver's companion and fellow writer, lays out the circumstances of their last years together with matter-of-fact grace.

The last poems . . .
By Ronald Scheer
This was Raymond Carver's 11th and apparently last book of poems, published after his death by his wife Tess Gallagher, who writes a long, thoughtful introduction describing Carver's last months before dying of cancer at age 50. Unlike his previous collection, "Where Water Comes Together With Other Water," this book has a number of poems that are more dream-like and surreal, the references not always easy to grasp. There are story poems that resemble the characters and situations in his short stories. And there are brief selections from the writings and poems of Anton Chekhov, Czeslaw Milosz, and others, which provide an allusive context of ideas and images for Carver's own poems.

There is the usual melancholy and awareness of death in these poems, made more riveting by the knowledge of the poet's awareness of his own approaching death. Reading his words and apprehending the emotions they convey, you find yourself treasuring deeply your own living moments - all of them, ordinary or extraordinary as they may be.

The poems are variations on related themes, ideas and observations captured and rendered in a wide variety of moods. There is sad bitterness in a poem about his son, "On an Old Photograph Of My Son." There are memories of boyhood in Yakima and a memoir-like fragment in "Some Prose on 'Poetry'," describing a stranger's gift of poetry books to him at an impressionable age. "His Bathrobe Pockets Stuffed With Notes" is a playful catalog of random thoughts entertained and then dismissed as "horsing around." Another poem, rich with evocative detail, illustrates the creative process, "The Painter & the Fish." There are love poems, a sadly humorous poem about his toes, and a poem about the excesses of Alexander the Great.

It's a fine book, a great reminder of things that really matter - of living the dwindling days wholeheartedly.

This is Raymond Carver's last collection of poems. It was put together with the help of the love and companion of the last eleven years of his life, the writer Tess Gallagher. She also includes a long introduction to the work explaining the process of the book's making.

Carver is a poet of directness, simplicity, emotional courage. His poems are often stories built around direct observations or statements of his present mood, a mood that is also reflective on other times of life. The poems which I believe are most moving often have to do with relationships, with his father, with his former wife, with his children.

His world is often a disordered and painful one, the alcoholic's world , the world of those in debt and down. But there is in him almost always a redemptive appreciation of life, a certain hidden joy and emotional surprise which gives the poems their special life.

Among the beautiful poems of this work is one called 'Cherish' in which he tells of the tenderness in his relationship with Tess Gallagher.

I was very moved by the last poem , a fragment that sums up the man and the redemptive power of his work.

LATE FRAGMENT

And did you get what

you wanted from this life, even so?

I did.

And what did you want?

To call myself beloved, to feel myself

beloved on the earth.

The Style is the Man
By Dorion Sagan
Raymond Carver, whom I had the fortuitous pleasure of having lunch with, along with his girfriend Tess Gallagher, a couple of years before he died, was a true artist. Emily Dickinson puts poets above the sun and God in pantheon of what's most important, and people like Raymond Carver prove her right. Although this last offering by the 20th century's greatest minimalist writer is neither his greatest nor his most minimal, it strikes the same generous chord of longing, of heart warming simplicity and heart breaking honesty, that Carver strikes elsewhere. The style is the man, wrote Buffon (in French), and sure enough that is the case here: a style of simple emotional honesty, combined with an artist's experimental will to playfulness, sufffused with a hope whose transcendent beauty is precisely its distillation from the undoctored elements of ordinary reality. This book, enhanced and completed by Tess Gallagher's wonderfully loving but unsentimental introduction, shows Carver at the end of his life; still excited about art, and the possibility of the poem form, he splices lines from Chekov stories, giving them titles and thereby
transforming them into poem epigraphs to his own measured prose. The transformation of the Chekov short story to the Carver poem perhaps underscores the poetic process itself, whittling down reality into its artistic essence--the process so aptly demonstrated by Carver, who never wrote a novel, in his short stories. As Salmon Rushdie says on the cover (I paraphrase), read this book by Carver. Read everything by Carver. Raymond Carver was a great writer.

Ballerina Lucia del Mar has two great passions: dance, which consumes most of her waking hours, and the Internet, which brings the outside world into her tightly regimented life. These two passions collide when a White House performance and reception leads to an encounter with handsome Moroccan businessman Rashid al-Jazari, creator of a brilliant technology that has set the Internet rumor mill ablaze.

A second, seemingly chance meeting with Rashid plunges Lucia into a deadly world of desire and intrigue, for although his work has implications she cannot foresee, there are those who do understand and would turn its great power to their own destructive purposes.

As Lucia is drawn deeper and deeper into Rashid's life and work, cut off from the outside world, she finds herself becoming more attracted to him. But is her seclusion within Rashid's well-guarded Moroccan home intended to ensure her safety - or her silence? And is it already too late to stop the terrible consequences his new technology could unleash?

Romance is the focus
By David Schlinkert
Although Asaro has a following in both Science Fiction and Romance, "The Veiled Web", is first a romance; the Science Fiction content is secondary. Asaro's reoccurring theme of emerging machine intelligence serves as a driver for much of the action in the novel, but story focuses on odd and unlikely meeting and marriage of Lucia del Mar, a ballerina bearing a striking resemblance to (dare I say it?), the good doctor, and a Moroccan software designer. Oh, and we must include his son, Zaki, an electronic "tourist guide", who resents being shutdown. With this nicely paced, well written romance, Asaro forges a link between the romance novel and the international espionage genera. Well met!

Something to think about no matter what your background
By Amazon Customer
An American ballerina and a Moroccan computer scientist enter into a marriage of convenience to escape from kidnappers. She learns about him, his family and his culture while he learns about her and tries to learn who is after them. Meanwhile, the AI entity he's created learns about everything, as they try to prevent anyone from learning about it. The AI proves his true nature in a tear-jerking climax, while the strength of the hero and heroine's love for each other must prove sufficient to overcome their own natures and social conditioning.
In a fresh and exciting turn from her more familiar science fiction epics, Asaro sets The Veiled Web in the near future (2010) on a very recognizable Earth. The book draws on Asaro's experience as a ballet dancer to present a realistic portrait of a dancer's life, without ever becoming weighed down by the details of individual dance steps or procedures. Similarly, just the right level of detail is given about Moroccan culture and architecture, rather than turning into a lecture on Islam or Moroccan history. The level of detail provided for the computer segments suffers slightly from the fast pace of change in that field, but once the basics are covered, Asaro dips into the more advanced AI concepts with the same light finesse she gave ballet and Moroccan culture.
Personally, I found the AI concepts riveting and thoroughly engrossing. The science is explained clearly, but the details can be passed over as more colorful phrases in a foreign language, without impacting the romantic suspense that is the heart of the story.
Most authors would be satisfied with a single rich backdrop, or one weighty set of issues. Not Asaro. It's a tribute to her storytelling skills that she manages to seamlessly weave together three elaborately detailed settings (the world of ballet, Morocco, and cyberspace) and two sets of neatly meshing yet distinct issues (the clash of cultures and religions, and the nature of thought and spirit). Each reader will probably find a different mix of setting and issues of primary interest. But no matter what your background, this book will give you something to think about, and people for which to care.

Reader from Texas
By A Customer
A terrific read, in a very different way than her "Skolian Saga" books. The characters were well-defined and real. The author did her homework on Islam and AI. In particular, she accurately conveyed a sense of how some Muslims practice Islam without resorting to the usual stereotypes, an approach I found most refreshing.

The Penguin has gone the way of the Dodo
By musicisitnatch
Folks, it's all over. It's the end of an era. What we used to know as "The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music" (last edition was 2010), has gone from approx. 1500 pages down to a mere 400 pages. Truth be told, the writing had been on the wall for some time. Those of us waiting for the 2011 edition knew something was afoot. Why the delay? Basically, Penguin has thrown in the towel. In their Introduction to this edition they state the the guide "had reached it's maximum capacity" and that their "chosen answer is to plan a more compact survey centering on 1,000 of the very finest issues". No apologies. Just that. THEIR chosen path. What about the buying Penguin Guide public?

I, for one, am bitterly disappointed in this decision. As we all know, there's a deluge of issues/reissues of great classical/historical performances these days, and a major factor must have been: How to keep up?
But surely, Penguin, with all of their resources, could have gone another route? One would have been to continue the "by composer" approach of the original guide, and then (somewhat like their earlier Year Books), published a "by artist" guide separately. They could have introduced a "by conductor" guide also. Maybe have opera spun off etc.etc.

Instead of that we now get (mostly), one pick of various repertoire, still organized by composer. And now, unlike the original format, we now don't even get the entire repertoire of a composer. Basically a "greatest hits" compilation. And if making the guide more compact was the priority why does Percy Grainger get 5 pages. (Brahms gets just over 3). Under Schumann, you won't find listed Furtwangler's 4th with the Berlin Philharmonic. It's not much more than a glorified version of what they did in the back pages of the 2003/4 Penguin Guide Edition.

One of the primary beauties of the old Penguin Guide was that one did read discussions of various interpretations.

This book will have some interest inasmuch as newer issues have come out since the 2010 Guide. (Example: The 21 CD Box Set: Furtwangler - The Great EMI Recordings"). But outside of that it is a bitter disappointment to see this guide reduced to a shell of what it once was. It could serve a function to someone who is virtually entirely new to the classical music arena. But outside of that I can only say that the Penguin Guide has gone the way of the brick and mortar record stores.

At the begining of the afore-mentioned 2003/4 Penguin Guide they stated that they "seek to provide a comprehensive, yet selective coverage of this vast repertoire", and "is in itself of fascinating documentary value".

Sadly, it's much, much more selective, no longer comprehensive, and as a result, not only has it lost it's documentary value, but has also lost it's heart. I will miss the eager anticipation that came with browsing the latest edition of this guide.

Of interest but not a mandatory reference
By Phil (not) in Magnolia
I purchased this guide with some hesitation, knowing that it took a different approach to the selection of classical recordings included compared to Penguin's traditional annual compilation.

The contents are of interest as a supplement to my other resources but I would not consider this to be a useful stand-alone reference. And in fact Penguin had been fighting a losing battle for some time, leading up to this publication in 2011. Their annual guides were becoming very large, not really unwieldy but awkward to use. Those of us who did (and still do) consider them a valuable reference were less concerned about the size of the volume as we were with the contents and the relative completeness. The annual challenge regarding what to add and what to remove, and how different we should expect the guide to be from one year to another were all things that every user had their own opinion on. Finally Penguin seems to have decided that the annual guide was impractical to update on that basis, and with this '1000 Finest' guide they tried to offer something different but still (hopefully) useful.

For my own reference I continue to use The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music 2008, which I consider to be recent enough for regular use in combination with the other resources available on the web.

Great Expectations, Big Frustration
By Joo Evoluo
As soon as I've pre-ordered this guide I remained curious and anxious until the item was delivered to my home some months later. However, after receiving it, I could not believe in what I was reading: a very British centered guide. Just some examples among the finest classical recordings listed: 15 entries for Elgar; 15 for Britten; 14 for Walton; 8 for Vaughan Williams; 8 for Bridge; 5 for Rutter; 4 for Holst; 4 for Bowen; 4 for Bliss; 4 for Rawsthorne; 4 for Tippet; 3 for Bax; 3 for Dyson; were also mentioned recordings from Alwyn, Ferguson, Butterworth, Mathias, as well as from many many other british composers that I will not list here. And believe it of not: 5 pages dedicated to Percy Graine with dozen of recordings suggested (more pages than even Schumann recordings have received!). But this is absolutely not the major problem... The big issue is that the following non-british composers, to name a few, did not deserve a single entry: Machaut, Delalande, Granados, Glass, Reich, Agricola, Berio, Ligeti, Feldman, Carter, Dufay, Gabrieli, Gubaidulina, Janequin, Kagel, Lassus, Mascagni, Nono, Rodrigo, Saariaho. Santoro, Schnittke, Takemitsu, Weiss, etc. An additional sad note: none of Glenn Gould's Goldberg Variation recordings deserved an entry... Briefly, the problem of this guide is the following: a "martian" reading it would conclude that, after the invencible Germans geniuses, the British composers are by far the most important ones in the history of the classical music... Shame on You, Penguin!
