A wonderful book for infopreneurs who want to sell distance learning programs.

I loved this book. I really liked it a lot! I'm in the process of putting together a virtual business that will provide a distance learning program, some publications, and a coaching service. Having this book to read was wonderful because it discusses the ins and outs of putting together an online education business, which is what distance learning programs are.

There are a number of books available today regarding infopreneurship and being an infopreneur. Creating articles, booklets, books, and reducing them to PDF files is the simplest way to be an infopreneur. But putting together teaching programs and providing the PDF files coupled with back and forth interaction through email and/or telephone is a bit more involved. It's still infopreneurship, but it is also distance learning or an online education business. This book explains what online education is about. And it gives you lots of resources and things to think about if you decide to take the plunge and start your own online education business. It has 14 chapters and two lists of resources in its appendix:

2. Entering the Online Learning Market
3. Start-up strategies

I was disappointed with Chapter 8 that discussed Choice of Entity (COE) issues and Business Plans. The COE material was VERY poor, and even wrong at times. LLCs don't dissolve just because an owner dies. The author simply did not know what he was talking about. Consider getting a copy of "Structuring Your Business" (ISBN: 1593371772) to get good information about COE. I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too. I think there should have been a full chapter devoted to business plans in this book. But there wasn't. Consider getting a copy of "Business Models Made Easy" (ISBN: 1599180413). I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too.

If you are wanting to build and run an online education business like me, then definitely get a copy of "Four Steps to Building a Profitable Coaching Practice" (ISBN: 0595296602). I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too. Three other books I highly recommend you read to supplement Mr. Mintzer's book are: "Mastering Online Marketing" (ISBN: 1599181517), "Web Business Success" (ISBN: 0974924504), and "The Web Savvy Writer" (ISBN: 0977830403). This last book is not currently being sold on Amazon. Google "websavvywriter" to find the author's site and you can buy it from her directly.

What I liked the most about this book was the number and quality of URLs provided of real life distance learning Web sites. They can be found in the body of the book and in the appendix (A1). The Glossary was a disappointment. Also, I found the expenses listed in starting and running an online education business to be high. In fact, very high! If you do the research necessary to write a sound 25-35 page business plan, then you will realize how off the mark the expenses listed in this book really are. It is possible to start such a business for next to nothing except for your time in creating your business plan and your product(s). 5 stars!

Can't Write

The first redundant paragraph demonstrated this person can't write. I read to page 3 and it was filled with the same information. I have never sent a book back to any dealer. I was shocked at the poor writing. This needed to be heavily edited then it may have been a good book. I was getting this book for myself and my friend ... we are both online teachers. I sent both back.

It appears that the publishers took chapters from other books and simply built this book. There is very little content devoted to the business of online education. Much of what the book spoke of was about naming, forming, funding and promoting any online business. This book was poorly researched.

Well thought out learning process

This is a cool book. Each page presents one Yoga Asana with the Sanskrit name and the English translation. Then each stick figure is presented in four stages of completion down the left side with four blocks to the right of each stage for drawing practice. I procrastinated about the price but it was worth it. The ability to draw yoga pose stick figures has made my note taking during and after a Yoga class much more efficient.

Blew me away

I finished Loved and Lost by Stephanie Kusiak. What can I even say about this book? It was a roller coaster ride of emotions for me. Brilliantly written with a story line like no other I have ever read. It begs the question, what would you do if you had the chance to do it all over again knowing what you know now? But it really is so much more than that. I don't even know that I can find the words to accurately describe what this book evoked for and within me. I don't give five star ratings because the endings and surprises of most romance stories are usually quite easy to guess. The characters are equally strong and written equally well. You know both main characters very well and feel for them early on.

Excellent

As a novice student of Kabbalah and Chassidut I found Rabbi Stiensaltz' 'Opening The Tanya' a great introduction to this classic work. To me, it was inspiring, challenging, thought provoking and sobering. Beautiful in its exposition, I found that it brought clarity and perspective to the language of Kabbalah. It is revealing in its discussion of the human soul, the quest, the conflict, and our innate duality. This is a book I will revisit and use in my studies. I highly recommend this work for those intent on expanding their hearts and souls toward their Creator.
I am currently reading volume two, 'Learning from The Tanya' and find it's seamless continuation an invitation to ascent and vigilence in the pursuit of Godliness.

God cannot be seen, but he can certianly be read!

An infinite divinity bursting from the pages of a single book! Opening the Tanya was an eye-opener, and more importantly, a soul-opener. Superbly written, engaging, insightful, a real pleasure. Unbelievably thorough research, background information, meaning and information. I'm very impressed. What a masterpiece! What a life-transformer; no one can read it and remain unmoved, spiritually speaking. Steinsaltz and Tauber - that's like winning the lotto twice in a day. Now I'll have to buy the other two in the series.

Tanya for most modern readers would generally be a very difficult text to understand due to the complexities of the subject of Jewish mysticism and the milieu from which emerged. Rabbi Steinsaltz has been able to make it and the philosophy behind it comprehensible to the serious student of Jewish mystical thought. It is a remarkable achievement.

Beautiful and very well received

Gave this as a gift for a friend's 14-year old son, who happens to love drawing and researching sneakers. He couldn't believe that such a book existed. It's difficult to find anything for a teenage boy that isn't electronic, but this book was a big hit.

About the Author

Julian Lindley-French is Professor of Military Operational Science at the Netherlands Defence Academy. Formerly he was Director of the International Security Policy Training Course at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. An historian by training he graduated from Oxford University in 1980. He received a Masters Degree in International Relations (with distinction) from UEA in 1992 and a doctorate in political science from the European University Institute in Florence in 1996.

About the Author

Andrew Collette holds a Ph.D. in physics from UCLA, and works as a laboratory research scientist at the University of Colorado. He has worked with the Python-NumPy-HDF5 stack at two multimillion-dollar research facilities; the first being the Large Plasma Device at UCLA (entirely standardized on HDF5), and the second being the hypervelocity dust accelerator at the Colorado Center for Lunar Dust and Atmospheric Studies, University of Colorado at Boulder. Additionally, Dr. Collette is a leading developer of the HDF5 for Python (h5py) project.

Andrew Collette's "Python and HDF5" is a welcome, overdue, and timely addition to the Python canon. h5py, an interface to HDF5 in Python, has become the proverbial "gateway drug" into HDF5 for most; however, h5py lacked for some time what this book now delivers--- a clear, concise, example-ridden text that teaches even the most novice of Python users how to leverage HDF5.

The author assumes minimal familiarity with Python and numpy; however, in the event you're coming at this cold, chapter 2 walks you through the basics. The author continues with datasets (as he writes, "the central feature of HDF5"). After that, you're off and running and free to explore the remaining sections on chunking and compression, hierarchy, external links, attributes, etc. He even includes a section on parallel HDF5 with mpi4py (a welcome surprise).

As someone who's aimlessly "Googled" his way through h5py in the past, I have to say this book is worth every penny. It's all here. Let this book and Python shape the way you think about HDF5, and maybe for the first time, you will see its simplicity.

An excellent technical read, concise, professional

It is probably yesterday’s news that Python is the de facto programming language for anything Data Science. And the latest book on Python and HDF5 integration is a more recent proof to that.

I want to state here that it seems to be the ONLY book on the market today on the becoming increasingly popular self contained data storage and manipulation format HDF5 that explains how to program against it in Python at an enterprise level.

Even though it is a book review, let me briefly explain that HDF5 is a database like, hierarchical file structure closely resembling the early file-based databases implementing Balanced Tree indexing for fast data retrieval. The fact the file is self contained helps keep data, attributes and even computational results together for transparent data exchange, in fact it is so inter-operating platforms exchange-ready it takes complete care of the platform differences as little-endian versa big-endian for example, and boy Andrew knows how to explain that in the book!

Actually, the book has made me aware of how important it is to use proper technologies when you have no idea where (here platform) your data will be consumed.

As a brief side note, myself I programmed hierarchical data structures for fats data retrieval in the early 90s, in C, not even knowing they are called B-Trees. And the concept has such a broad implementation.

So in short, the book is excellent, written in a concise, professional manner (between me and you, 0 volume inflating fluff).

The author has made sure the book is full of useful examples covering each nuance or an important feature so reading this book feels natural and logical. I am also glad the author devoted a significant effort to convey to a developer ( I hate the word ‘programmer’ :-) ) on the proper methods of concurrent programming, which is what a pity – a common omission in many beginners’ books.

I am sure this book will make you going or will let you start coding against HDF5 in no time. I am sure this book will be used as a table reference (or on your computer desktop).

I am giving this book a 5 out of 5 rating, kudos to O’Reilly that has delivered yet another outstanding publication.

Within a day of arrival with their father, however, the children are thrown into a world of pure evil, wild magic, and interdimensional shamanic travel. The world of this wonderful story is a blend of familiar elements: languages are satisfyingly almost French and almost Slavic; religions are akin to Judaism and Christianity. Spirited, fiercely individualistic Yuda is the most fascinating character. Relationships are complex and realistic. Answers aren't easy, and endings aren't tritely happy, though the promise of light and redemption lies shrouded by the tale's heady dark mystery. A Good Debut Novel

Funny thing. A couple weeks ago, I was talking with a friend and we both complained about how there are so few fantasy novels with good portraits of family life. Then I went to the library and found "Children of the Shaman". Thankfully, newcomer Jessica Rydill decided to focus on character-driven fantasy. The story involves two children, Annat and Malchik, who have been raised by their aunt but are now going to join their estanged father, who has just taken a new position in a town to the far north. The level of control and sophistication in the character development is quite impressive. Clearly Rydill understands that interesting people have to be at the heart of a good story. In "Children of the Shaman", it's easy to grow attached to all five of the main characters, because they all have believable strengths and flaws.
The story is set in a remote frozen North. The level of technology seems to be about mid nineteenth century, as we see trains and other glimpses of industrial technology. Unlike many fantasy authors, Rydill actually has researched and understood the societies on which her world is modeled. Thus, we get solid world-building, with lots of attention to the details of daily life, such as medical practice. Indeed, after the first hundred pages or so, this was looking like a five-star book.
Things change a bit once when one character is abducted and taken to a strange alternate universe and the others follow in an attempt to save him. To be sure, Rydill offers some inventive and intriguing possibilities for this new world. Bands of visitiors who have made a deal with evil forces, and mysterious group of people who walk on stilts, and so forth. The problem is that much of the behavior we see during these encounters just doesn't ring true the way that earlier scenes did. For instance, in one situation the heroes encounter a band of natives who mistakes them for a Goddess and her followers. However, the entire scenario, and most particularly the dialogue, feels somewhat forced and unrealistic.
So in summary, "Children of the Shaman" is a good book that could have been even better. Since the ending seems to point towards a possible sequel, we can only hope that Rydill will return to this world, and possibly pay more attention towards capturing realistic behavior in odd situations. Also, the editor needs to be more careful, since this book has a number of errors in spelling and word choice. Finally, I should note that although there are only a few violent scenes here, Rydill does not flinch from intense descriptions, and she has graphic portraits of fight scenes and injuries.

A Wonderful Surprise

I received this book as a cheap gift from a dollar store, and had my doubts about how good it would be. Happily, my doubts were unfounded. For those who get tired of the standard fantasy genre that uses a medieval setting and the requisite elves, dragons, and evil wizards, this will be a nice change of pace. The early industrial age technology, religions based on Christianity and Judaism, and easily recognized European geography add an extra dimension to the story as the reader wonders if this is an alternate 18th century Earth, a future earth that has begun to recover after some major calamity, or something completely different. Not all of the "heros" are totally perfect or always heroic, not all the villians are completely despicable, and relationships get complicated. With any luck, this is the first of many books that Rydill will produce.

exciting dangerous story of journey

I highly suggest that you read this book.It is a journey filled with incredible detail from a very kool writer. This book has exciting young characters who encounter all kinds of fantasy and emotional events as they discover their world/s and their family relationships...the language the author uses is vivid and evokes an imaginative tour that follows the children...I loved this book and imediatly sent to AmazonUK for the second novel about these charming characters The Glass Mountain, which I have also finished reading and cared for deeply!!!Both stories work on many levels,sharing worthy bloody battle scenes and touching personal encounters..best young adult series I have read this year!!would make an awesome video game too in my opinion
