global language use

I read this book to research the topic of English as a global lingua franca as part of a graduate course in sociolinguistics. It is about the single most useful text I read in this field. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in how English is used in different contexts across the globe. The text gives critical insight throughout, e.g. looks at the spread of English past and present in contexts such as Nigeria, India, Japan etc.

An Excellent Anthology

If you're interested in getting some insight into English on the world stage, this book is an excellent place to start. Kachru has collected some of the best articles on the changes that have taken place in the English language. As English is adopted by more and more people in countries where it isn't a native language, it is changed and molded. An interesting point which is brought up is that when native speakers use deviant language, it is termed as dialect, creativity, or a slip, but when non-natives use the language, it is called an error. In this book, it is argued that English belongs to all those that use it. In other words, to use a language means to have mastery over it, so it can be used as the owner pleases. To provide further support for non-native varieties, many authors say that non-native Englishes are not necessarily for use with natives, but with other non-natives.

A lot of the points brought up in this book are very interesting. I recommend it for all who are studying Sociolinguistics and for those who are interested in English's role in the world and its possible future.

The classic

If one were asked to name the definite book on the use of English as an international language this would probably be the item to go for. There are other more controversial (and thus often more popular) books written on the subject - such as Crystal's "English as a Global Language" and Phillipson's "Linguistic Imperialism". However, if one is looking for a book that avoids the polemical pitfall of oversimplification, Kachru's work (although 10 years old by now) remains the best buy.
The 1992 edition (the first one came out in 1982) contains contributions by (nearly) all the big names in the field such as Joshua Fishman (sociology), Peter Strevens, Larry E. Smith (intelligibility), Peter Lowenberg (testing), Ayo Bamgbose (Nigerian English), Edwin Thumboo (literature) and Cecil Nelson (communicative competence) to name only a few. Of course there are contributions by Kachru as well, most notably perhaps his article on teaching world Englishes which teachers might find highly useful.
The multitude of perspectives is the book's biggest advantage; it leaves it to the reader to form his/her own opinion instead of trying to sway him towards a preconceived thesis (as in Crystal's and Phillipson's work). All in all, this book can be recommended to beginners and professionals, students and teachers, in short to everyone who has an interest in World Englishes.

This is the last book in this series and my least favorite. I love Jaci Burton and most of her books. This series started off pretty good with an interesting, but short, novella. Then book 2 and 3 I liked. Then book 4 was just okay. I had to read it to finish up the series, but it wasn't my favorite.

I love this series and was pleasantly surprise that each book could stand on its own. After reading a few books in a series they can become trite but this was not the case in this series. I wish there were more siblings so the series could continue. A great read and an awesome series. I am a fan!!!!

Really well-written

This is a great book, very well written by (I think) the foremost expert on project management for small business. Sid Kemp also happens to be a superb writer. My experience reading this book (twice) was enjoyable and crystal clear. The writing is personal, and neither dry not 'cutesy.' I found it a pleasure to read and the content invaluable.

Don't let the words "project management" put you off. It's a great introduction to an enormously practical topic. It is hard for me to imagine anyone who wants to run their business better not benefiting from it.

This book has helped me plan my ideas out much more clearer than I was able to before reading this book. Overall I think it is a really good read ,and ideal for someone who is in the planning stages of creating their own business. It breaks down why planning is important. The real reason why it needs to done ,and how to turn those plans into a reality.

Blaine Smith (M.Div., Wesley Theological Seminary; D.Min., Fuller Theological Seminary) is an ordained Presbyterian minister who lectures widely on topics of guidance and God's will, Christian living, and personal growth. A frequent guest on Christian radio programs, Smith has also appeared twice on The 700 Club. His lectures have been recorded for Guidance by the Book, part of a home-study course produced by the Christian Broadcasting Network. In 1978 Smith founded Nehemiah Ministries with the goal of "helping Christians understand God's guidance in their lives and realize their personal potential." essential reading

When I was having difficulty deciding if my now-husband was the "right" person for me, I searched for answers from family, friends, and prayer. I believe that prayer and my persistence led me to M. Blaine Smith's books. Even though his "Yes Anxiety" title covers making wise decisions in several different areas, his insight into relationships is remarkable. I read "Should I get married?" after it. During courtship and engagement, I held onto these two titles and referred to them constantly. I learned so much about myself and what love and long-lasting marriage should be! I had been ambivalent and at times unsure as to what I should do about the prospect of marriage, even after I became engaged, and I spent many hours pouring over these two books. The most important thing that I learned is that NO ONE can be absolutely sure about any decision they make - with the help of family, friends, and reliance on God and belief that He wants the very best for you, you can make a decision and stick to it. I was able to make one of the most important decisions in my life because of the important lessons I learned from Smith's knowledge. As some people have mentioned in their reviews, yes, these books are written from a CHRISTIAN perspective, and the author is clear about that. If you are not a Christian, you may not find much here unless you open your mind to the many truths stated. For Christian singles - please read the two books that I've mentioned in this review. I truly believe that they will be of as much benefit to you as they have been to me. Thank you, Mr. Smith, for helping a very confused young lady make a change in her life - marriage to a man who is not only her husband, but her very, very best friend!

I've just finished reading the book "Should I Get Married" by M. Blaine Smith. It's by far the best book I've ever read on the subject of serious dating relationships. With an approach appealing to both character and commonsense, Smith walks you through question after question, fear after fear, and helps put things in their proper perspective.

A must read for those thinking about getting married

I was considering marriage to my girlfriend, but was still unsure about the prospect of getting married. I read other books about picking the right partner, etc... but Blaine Smith's book was exactly what I was looking for. It helped me understand the myths in society about who's the right person. The book helped me to understand what is really important in picking a marriage partner. As I continued to read his book, I realized what I thought was important for a relationship was really not that important and that I was missing the important compatility issues. It helped me to clear my thinking in deciding what factors represent a healthy relationship. For example, having the romance in a relationship "That Spark" is nice, but it isn't the most important thing in sustaining a long-term relationship like marriage. I struggled with my moderate romantic feelings with my girlfriend, but came to understand that this is okay since I had deep feelings of compassion for her which is a far greater value in a relationship than sexual arousal. The book covers key compatibility factors to help you decide if the relationship you are in is prepared for marriage. Plus, it also talks about what to look for if you are single and what you can do to find that potential mate. I highly suggest this book to anyone.
